FIGURE 10.-Oak Ridge, Tennessee. . . Uranium enrichment through gaseous diffusion. The large tanks weigh 10 tons and contain feed material, uranium hexafluoride, for the enrichment process carried out in the AEC's gaseous diffusion plants at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Paducah, Kentucky, and Portsmouth, Ohio. The material fed into the gaseous diffusion process comes out richer in the U-235 isotope of uranium rich enough in U-235 to be made into uranium fuel elements for nuclear power reactors. This picture shows two of the 10-ton containers on the bed of a truck that brought them to the Oak Ridge gaseous diffusion plant.
