CONTRIBUTORS John A. DeNovo, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) where he teaches American foreign relations, holds a Ph.D. from Yale University. From 1948 to 1964 he taught at the Pennsylvania State University. One of the country's leading diplomatic historians, he is the author of American Interests and Policies in the Middle East, 1900-1939 and is at work on a sequel to that for the period from 1939 to the end of World War II. Samuel P. Hays is chairman of the Department of History at the University of Pittsburgh. A native of Indiana, he holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard. He is the author of, among other works, The Response to Industrialism and Conservation and the Gospel of Efficiency: The Progressive Conservation Movement. Harry N. Scheiber is professor of history at the University of California, San Diego. He received his doctoral degree from Cornell University in 1961 after which he taught history for 11 years at Dartmouth College. An economic historian, he is currently completing studies of property law, federalism, and the American economy. He is the author of Ohio Canal Era and one of the contributors to Law in American History, Black Labor in America, The Frontier in American Development, and America: Purpose and Power. His articles have appeared in many journals of history and law. In 1972-74 he served as president of the Council on Research in Economic History. Norriss S. Hetherington teaches the history of science and technology at the University of Kansas. He holds a B.A. in physical sciences and M.A. degrees in astronomy and in history from the University of California at Berkeley and the Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science from Indiana University. Eric Feaver was born in Laramie, Wyoming, and grew up in Norman, Oklahoma, where he received his B.A. in government, history, and economics from the University of Oklahoma. He attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies before serving a tour as an army combat medic in Vietnam. Upon returning, he earned an M.A. in American history from the University of Maryland and is now teaching English and social studies in Helena, Montana.
