More serious perhaps is the problem of the translated work losing its original contextual significance (e.g. the genre in which the ST is written becoming defunct in the TL at the time of translating – Bassnett, 1980: 83).
Literary translation is an obvious area to which the scheme outlined above may be usefully applied, but research into other genres can also benefit from the wealth of insights which Nida's work has provided for us over the years.
