ORIGINALITY PAYS

Because it is the Originator of Type Fashions, the output of the American Type Founders Company has grown to be greater than that of any other type foundry in the world.

WEIGHT FONTS HELP THE COMPOSITORS

By originating the policy of selling job types in weight fonts at body type prices, the American Type Founders Company has helped the compositors, who are the men, above all others, who appreciate the benefits derived from full cases.

TYPE FAMILIES HELP THE COMPOSITORS

By originating the Type Family Idea, which is an extension of a popular type design into a number of related series, all working together in harmony, while giving ample variety of color and emphasis, the American Type Founders Company has helped the compositors, who are no longer forced to use a number of inharmonious series to complete a job.

NUMBER ONE

The Label on Heptasoph Printing.

At the bi-ennial session of the supreme conclave, Improved Order Heptasophs, held at Milwaukee, Wis., June 13-17, resolutions were adopted requiring that in the future all printed matter used at headquarters, and by the various officers of the order, as well as all pamphlets used in and distributed to obtain new members, shall have thereon the label of the allied printing trades council. Heretofore there has been an absence of the label on Heptasoph printing, and many members of the order have found it a serious drawback when approaching prospective

members.

E. P. Carpenter, of Pittsburg; Elmer Throssell, of Newark, N. J.; Philip S. Evans, of Newcastle, Pa.; George M. Lang, of Pittsburg, and Harry B. Hardwick, of Baltimore, were union printers who were representatives from their respective cities at the convention and prepared and worked for the adoption of the amendment to the Heptasophs laws. After the several members of the International Typographical Union had explained the need of the label as a further means of increasing the membership of the order the resolutions were adopted without a dissenting vote by the 400 delegates.

There are several other fraternal orders whose printing does not bear the label, and if printer delegates would get together as was done at Milwaukee they would not find it a difficult matter to have enacted such laws as were adopted there.

CONSTANT label agitation has unionized many unfair concerns.

San Francisco-The Home. During the past two years more than sixty thousand dollars has been expended at the Union Printers Home in additions and improvements to the institution. A library building has been added and on the ground floor of this building is one of the most complete and up-to-date culinary departments; also, a refrigeration room, bakeshop, storeroom and other features that can not fail to be of interest. In the library, which occupies the second floor of the addition, are 10,000 volumes of fiction, history, scientific works, standard works, etc., and the third and fourth floors of the addition contain accommodations for residents.

The heating plant has been greatly enlarged and improved, and two 150-horsepower boilers installed.

The grounds have been further beautified and improved.

Altogether, the institution is as complete as such a project well can be.

To the delegates and visitors to the San Francisco convention who will make the westward trip via Denver and Colorado Springs, the Home should be a great attraction. During August the Home grounds are at their best and the institution is peculiarly attractive. The board of trustees and the superintendent of the Home are anxious that convention attendants shall devote a day to inspection of the institution, preferably on the going trip. Arrangements will be made so that those who take advantage of the opportunity to see the Home and who can only stay a few hours in the Springs will be afforded every facility for a

rapid inspection of the institution. Those who can devote a full day to the stopover, in addition to an inspection of the Home, will find many other points of local interest that will well repay a visit. Colorado Springs and vicinity comprise one of the greatest scenic regions on the continent.

By all means visit the Union Printers Home. If you can not do it on the going trip, do not overlook the opportunity on the return trip. Such a chance may never come to you again.

Notice to Correspondents.

Under the new order of the postoffice department, directing that THE TYPOGRAPHICAL JOURNAL, together with magazines and periodicals of a similar character, be shipped by freight to central distributing points, it is absolutely necessary that the forms close at the earliest possible moment. While the 20th of the month preceding publication is the time limit on which copy can be received, members desiring to contribute to the columns of THE JOURNAL are requested to forward their communications at the earliest possible moment.

Photographs intended for reproduction in THE JOURNAL should reach the editor not later than the 17th of the month preceding publication. This rule is necessary in order that the engraving establishment may have sufficient time to produce good work.

Correspondents will confer a favor on the editor and at the same time insure distribution of our official magazine as near the regular date of publication as can be achieved under the new ruling of the postmaster general if they will bear the above requests in mind.

A CORDIAL invitation is extended to all delegates and their friends, both going to and coming from the San Francisco convention, to make the Union Printers' Club, 110 South Dearborn street, their headquarters while in Chicago. The club is better able to accommodate visitors than ever before, having considerably increased its floor space during the past year. Special cards will be issued giving all the privileges of members of the club to visitors.

The San Francisco Convention.

The extremely low railroad rates prevailing to the Pacific coast this summer insure one of the largest annual conventions in the history of the International Typographical Union. Besides the reduced fare for the summer season offered by the TransContinental Passenger Association, in effect from June 1 to September 30, inclusive, with final return limit October 31, convention goers will have the benefit of a special convention rate secured through the efforts of Vice-President George A. Tracy. Under this plan, a round-trip ticket from Chicago to San Francisco will cost $62.50, and from Missouri river points $50, with dates of sale August 7, 8, 9 and 10, and final return limit October 15. As the convention opens Monday, August 14, there will be ample time for those who take advantage of this rate to reach San Francisco. It is probable that many delegates and visitors will go by way of Seattle, as that union has made great preparations to entertain those who go by the northern routes. Seattle will do the honors August 8 and 9, and on the way south to the convention city stops will be made at Portland and Shasta Springs. Los Angeles Union No. 174 intends to take charge of the convention crowd after the week's sessions are over and show its guests the wonders of the southern California metropolis and its environs.

Delegates and visitors, when arranging for their transportation to the convention, can, without additional cost, make provision for a stopover, either going or coming, at Colorado Springs, and should, by all means, take advantage of this opportunity to visit the Union Printers Home. Extensive improvements have been made on the Home property during the past two years, and even those who have visited the institution in recent years should take advantage of this chance to see the Home in its completed state. The improvements mentioned are fully set forth in another article in this issue.

The Union Printers Home is now one of the most beautiful spots in Colorado and is included in the sight-seeing trips of thousands of tourists who visit that wonderful

section each season. No member of our organization who has the opportunity of visiting this great institution, of which he is part owner (the only one of its kind in the world), should fail to do so.

The Hotel Argonaut, European plan, $1.50 per day and upward, will be the headquarters, and the sessions will be held in Eagles' Hall, about five blocks distant. Convention attendants are assured of plenty of hotel accommodations at reasonable rates. Besides the Argonaut, there are any number of good hotels in the immediate vicinity where the service is said to be excellent and the charges not at all excessive.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS.

The change made in the convention laws at the Minneapolis session requires that all amendments, resolutions, etc., must be submitted by a delegate or through a subordinate union. The committee on laws will be in session at the Hotel Argonaut five days previous to the opening of the convention for the purpose of considering amendments to our laws, so that an intelligent report may be made. Subordinate unions or delegates having amendments to the International laws, or any proposition which they desire to have placed before the convention, should forward them at once to Secretary-Treasurer Hays. This method, if complied with, will insure earnest consideration by the committee and action by the convention during the early days of the session.

DEPOSIT YOUR CREDENTIALS.

As soon as they arrive in San Francisco, delegates should deposit their credentials with Secretary-Treasurer Hays at the Hotel Argonaut. This is absolutely necessary, as a complete roll call can be compiled in no other way. Also President Lynch will be unable to consider the delegate's name when making up the convention committees unless the credentials are in the hands of the secretary-treasurer.

ARREARAGES OF LOCAL UNIONS.

Before leaving for the convention delegates should be sure that their local union is not in arrears to the International body. All indebtedness must be paid before the

delegate is seated and entitled to deliberation in the business of the sessions. All per capita tax, pension assessment, etc., up to and including the month of June must be in the hands of Secretary-Treasurer Hays to enable the delegate to have a voice and vote in the convention. This is important, and should not be overlooked by the delegates-elect. Much annoyance can be saved if the delegates assure themselves that the law has been complied with in this respect before their departure for San Francisco.

REDUCED RAILWAY RATES.

The following is a copy of the tariff issued by the Trans-Continental Passenger Association. The irregular number given to the footnotes is necessary because the figures used are identical with the numbers used in the tariffs furnished selling agents. Should there be any misunderstanding between parties purchasing tickets and the selling agents, attention should be called to circular 661, supplement 18 to circular 628, issued to agents by the Trans-Continental Association, wherein full information will be found:
