PATRICK HENRY ADDRESSING THE VIRGINIA CONVENTION. Patrick Henry, orator and statesman, was born in Virginia, May 29th, 1736. He was a zealous patriot in the War of the Revolution, and a delegate to the First General Congress in Philadelphia, in 1774. March 23d, 1775, before the Virginia Convention, he made his eloquent speech: "I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death." He was elected Governor of Virginia in 1776. THINE Mother of Presidents and States. He was chosen first President of the United States, and inaugurated at New York, April 30, 1789, re-elected in 1792, but declined a third term. John Brown, leader of Harper's Ferry insurrection, designed to incite the slaves to rebellion, and in 1859 began active hostilities, captured the arsenal, and made the inhabitants prisoners.
